Meet Sara
from
Sugar Kahne Bake Shop
Can you tell us a little about you?
I’m an optimist red head who’s always up for a party or a late night Pinterest project.
Wife and mother of 3 kiddos in New Lenox, IL.
I love to sing, dance and watch Disney movies.
My favorite quote is “life is short, eat dessert first.”
Can you tell us a little about your business?
Cookies, cookies, cookies!!!
I specialize in custom sugar cookies. Anything you want on a cookie ... faces, logos, characters, sprinkles, any details to make your event stand out.
In May 2019, I jumped into this business with 2 feet. Making cookies for my daughters preschool graduation. The orders started rolling in and I just kept baking.
Since then, I’ve turned our New Lenox dining room into a cookie factory.
This business has grown faster than I could have dreamed. So grateful for all of my customers.
It brings me so much joy to hear my customer reactions to seeing their cookies. I put so much love and time into the details to WOW my customers.
What made you want to start your business?
Admiring the work of Cake Boss, Charm City Cakes, and countless Food Network baking challenges made me want to explore edible art. I love the DETAILS
One of my favorite roles as Mom is “party planner” I love any themed party. And admittedly go overboard for our kids celebrations.
It wasn’t until my youngest turned 3 that I thought; let’s give this a whirl. My first project was a Lightning McQueen car cake. I was able to watch enough YouTube videos and make his cake come to life. After seeing my son’s reaction I was hooked. Looking for more baking projects. Next I wanted to try cookies.
I’m beyond thankful for a high school friend who taught me her baking and decorating process.
This business has been a dream come true. I’ve always loved art, but never knew what I could do with it. Cookies are the perfect creative outlet!!!
Why do you think it is important for women to support other women?
As Elphaba says “You’re Unlimited”
A reminder and encouragement sometimes makes the biggest difference. When I know people are cheering for me it drives me to do more.
If you could go back in time and tell yourself one thing when starting out, what would that be?
Sara your time is worth $$$.
You are the secret ingredient!
So value what you bring to the table.
Each cookie order can take anywhere from 5-12 hours to complete. Making dough, baking, sketching designs, mixing colors, decorating, taking photos, and packaging.
What were some obstacles/challenges along the way?
So many things I’ve learned along the way.
My biggest challenge is balance. Managing my time between family, my fulltime job and cookie time. I tend to overextend myself each week. I tend to spend the day with my family and the late nights/early mornings in cookie world.
Also remembering to stay in my own lane. Celebrate my personal growth and not compare myself to other cookie decorators. There will always be someone at a higher skill level. I can’t let that discourage me instead inspire me to try new techniques.
If you could go anywhere in the world, where would you go?
Back to Maui.
It’s the most beautiful place on earth.
Bring me a tiki drink. I’m ready for island life.
Sunrise, sunburn, sunset repeat!
Which babe in history would you want to have lunch with, and why?
I want to have lunch with Reese Witherspoon.
#someday
She’s incredible inside and out. Mother, actress, producer, fashion designer, etc...
Why is it important to have a personal brand?
Branding sets you apart.
