boudoir session prep
‘The beauty of a woman is not in the clothes she wears, the figure that she carries, or the way she combs her hair. The beauty of a woman is seen in her eyes, because that is the doorway to her heart, the place where love resides. True beauty in a woman is reflected in her soul. It’s the caring that she lovingly gives, the passion that she shows & the beauty of a woman only grows with the passing years.’ - Audrey Hepburn
There are so many reasons to do a boudoir session: To fall in love with yourself, celebrate weight loss, reclaiming your confidence after hard times, or, just because you want to!
Boudoir should be an stress-free experience. But there are some things to consider before your session…
Posing
It is not your job to create gorgeous imagery, it is mine. Your session will be guided and directed. The professional hair and makeup, styling, and photography works as a team so that your personalized production will leave no room for uncomfortable or awkward moments of being unsure on what to do and how you look. We will support and guide you through the process by showing you and telling you exactly what needs to be done and providing feedback the whole time. While it is natural for you to feel a little nervous, be assured, this is our job and we specialize in creative beautiful images.
what to wear | styling your session
Let’s face it - not everyone is going to feel comfortable wearing a thong and a smile.
Wear something you are comfortable in, because when you are uncomfortable - it will show in your photos! So wear something that makes you feel sexy!
I recommend keeping it SIMPLE - bring a couple of pairs of panties and great push-up bras to wear. Some of the sexiest photos I have ever taken have been in a matching black or white pantie set.
You do not have to be naked or wear sexy lingerie for a boudoir shoot. You can wear whatever makes you comfortable. I’ve done shoots with women wearing everything, from crop tops and booty shorts to their favorite dress and heels. No matter the outfit, if you feel comfortable and beautiful, the photos will be stunning.
Don’t forget the little things: your favorite winter sweater, knee-high socks, thigh-high stockings, your ruby bracelet.
Maybe you’re doing this as a wedding gift for your fiance. A veil, wedding shoes, engagement ring, are all awesome add ons that they would die for. Your loved one would love to see you in something that’s theirs or something they bought for you. Their favorite teams jersey, dress shirt, a piece of jewelry, all some great ideas that they will totally notice and love.
The days leading up to your session:
Keep hydrated and moisturized. This includes lip balm. Drink lots of water for a healthy glow on the day of your session.
Practice your bedroom eyes.
Put together a playlist of music that will get you in a flirty and fun mood.
The night before your session:
Get your beauty sleep.
If you didn’t get waxed or laser hair removal, now is the time to shave. The closer to your session, the better.
Day of your session:
Wear loose clothes. No tight bra or panties. They all leave pressure lines on your body.
Wear CLEAR deodorant, or be prepared for your photographer to ask to you wipe off any white deodorant.
After the session
In regards to your photos, as we sort through all of the images from our session, we choose to edit the ones that best represent you. We love to give you the images where there are beautiful expressions, and priceless moments being captured. While we do not edit and/or share every image from our session, we do strive to deliver the best photo(s) of each pose.
We will aim to have your gallery portraits edited and ready within 2 - 3 weeks of our session. You will receive your photos on a personalized, password protected, online gallery. This allows for the quickest delivery of the images, for you to easily view and share your photos.
Frequently Asked Questions
WILL MY IMAGES BE RETOUCHED?
Always. I do not release unedited images. Let's face it, we all have our insecurities, but I am here to hide your flaws & ensure that you are PERFECT in your final image.
WHAT IF I’M NERVOUS?
That's natural! I personally like to use music therapy. During your session I plug in your ipod & turn up the volume! I find that this not only helps cure nerves, but creates the most stunning images!
Hair + Makeup
If you are having hair/makeup done on location, arrive with a clean, fresh face, and no product in your hair. Your hair and makeup artists will explain more to you if needed.
Not doing hair and makeup? That’s totally fine! Come ready to shoot. Photographers often fit multiple shoots in one day. Unless otherwise discussed, they won’t have time for you to get ready at their studio. A change in lip colour is one thing, but your whole hair and makeup routine will definitely cut into your session time.
I always recommend false lashes for any look. They make your eyes really pop!
Mani + Pedi
If you want your nails done, book your appointment for a couple days before your session. I would suggest steering clear of neons or bright colours – a solid colour that goes with your outfits is a solid choice.
Don’t forget, your toes will be visible for your boudoir shoot as well. It’s a good idea to get a pedicure the same day as your manicure. Our feet to often get forgotten.
Waxing, Laser Hair Removal, or Shaving?
Something I’m frequently asked is, “Which hair removal method is best, and how soon before my session should I do it?”
A Brazilian wax, bikini, or underarm wax should be done 5 – 7 days before your session. Waxing creates tiny wounds below the surface of your skin. Skin irritation, redness, and soreness from waxing can take a few days to fade.
Eyebrows are one of the biggest defining factors of your face. Book a brow wax about a week before your session. That way, any irritation will be cleared up by the time of your shoot.
For the best outcome of your photos, be mindful of the sun before your session. Harsh tan lines and sunburns are very hard and impossible to edit out. If you are a sun lover and get those harsh lines, a winter or spring session may be better for you.
Skip the tanning bed! They might be tempting, but it is not worth risking a burn.
A huge DO NOT for a boudoir session is getting a spray tan!
I know, I know….they can look really rad! But on camera, they often show up very orange and streaky. Save your money; rock your natural skin tone at your session.
WHAT IF I DON’T KNOW HOW TO MODEL?
Leave it to me! I have been professionally trained & will direct your poses throughout your session. I can work with all body types & will find a position & pose that works best for you.
IS MY SESSION PRIVATE? DO YOU SHARE MY IMAGES ONLINE?
Sessions are 100% private. Images are NEVER shared anywhere without your written permission. I will ask for permission to use specific images so you will even know which ones I want to share and you have final say in exactly which images you choose to share IF any. There's NO requirement to share images in order to book a session.
