Capturing Teenage Years: Why it’s as important as Baby and Toddler Years
They say time flies and it’s true. Before you know it your chubby handed baby has grown into a teenager, scrolling on their phone and not responding to your every beck and call. You might think the age of family photos is behind you after those early years, but I’m here to tell you that isn’t the case. In fact, we firmly believe that photographing teenagers is just as important and rewarding as capturing their baby and toddler years.
Teenagers are in the age of self-discovery and are finding their identity. It is a time when they are becoming more independent but still crave and need their parents’ love and support. It's a perfect time for breaking family photos which can show the growth, changes and beautiful memories created during this period.
Yes, we all have heard the stereotypes of teenagers being difficult and uncooperative. But, as a photographer, we completely reject it and think it’s a missed opportunity. Teenagers have so much to offer to a photoshoot. They bring out their personality in the way they dress, style their hair or use accessories. They express themselves more candidly and naturally in ways baby or toddlers cannot.
At this age, teenagers often feel self-conscious about their looks and are not always confident in front of the camera. But, with the help of a patient and encouraging photographer, they can start feeling more comfortable and have confidence in themselves. The photographs will give them an opportunity to see themselves in a different light and celebrate their strengths, inner beauty and uniqueness.
For those of you worried about teenagers looking moody or upset in their photos them, have no fear. A good photographer can capture their essence and personality during those “difficult” moments. They can use creative methods and poses, so the teenager feels natural and shows what makes them unique.
As parents, you should give yourselves permission to book a photoshoot with teenagers even if they aren’t willing or excited at first. The teenage years are just as important and worth documenting as the earlier years. In fact, capturing these years can capture the essence of their identity and serve as a great reminder of all of the beautiful memories created during this time. So let's rid ourselves of the belief that we have to white-knuckle through these years and embrace them instead!
